a thousand cranes

Soon after starting to photograph the cranes of Vancouver, I realized you could point the camera in any direction and find cranes.

This is the site of the Olympic Village (2010 Winter Olympics).  I know, there is no winter in Vancouver, so we are not actually having the winter olympics here, most of it is happening somewhere far away in the mountains.    These so-called green olympics have swallowed a billion dollars to widen the road to Whistler.  Renovations featured blasting right through Eagle Ridge Park.  Goodbye Eagle Ridge.  Welcome big new highway.  Hello Green Olympics.

The billion dollar renovation on the highway will shorten the trip from Horseshoe Bay to Whistler by fifteen minutes.

It sucks to hear that.  If anywhere, I'd expect Vancouver to invest in something other than wider roadways to get people to and from the Olympics.  Not ver green at all.

Vancouver only looks green from a distance, and now the spin is all about promoting projects as being green, no matter what.  So new highways?  Yep, they're green.  In the meantime, the air pollution is becoming worse every year.  So much for those glorious mountain views, increasing hidden by the incessant smog.

I was just telling my friend, Kevin, about this blog of yours.  I read it the day after you wrote it, and the image has stuck in my mind.  A thousand cranes… Kevin is going to Beijing with his family this summer.  He has been there before, and showed us lots of pictures from the construction for the Summer Olympics.  Some of the pictures were really sad.  They showed how buildings were torn down to make way for “progress”.  There is one photo in particular that struck me.  It is of a husband, wife and a dog.  They are standing on the foundation of the house next to theirs.  All of the houses in the neighborhood have been demolished.  Theirs is the last one standing.  I wonder what happened to all of the displaced families…  The Bird's Nest and the Watercube are amazing structures.  This is China's chance to show the world what it is made of.
I miss your blogs and your presence.  Please know that I have checked your site frequently.  Hope to hear more from you soon.
Extra Hugs!
